Case Study: Dental Practice

Scenting in dental waiting room sees reduced anxiety & Improved moods

“Results revealed that both ambient odors of
orange and lavender
reduced anxiety & improved mood
in patients waiting for dental treatment”

Lehrner, J; Medical University of Vienna

A study out of the University of Vienna included 72 patients between the ages of 22 and 57 while waiting for dental treatment. An ambient aroma of orange and lavender was diffused into the waiting room through an electrical dispenser in the scented group whereas in the control group no aroma was diffused into the air.

The research assessed by means of self-report demographic and cognitive variables, trait and state anxiety, and current pain, mood, alertness, and calmness. It followed on from a similar study by Lehrner J in 2000.

The research concluded that exposure to a natural essential oil of orange and lavender has a relaxant effect. Specifically, compared to the controls, those exposed to the ambient fragrance experienced “reduced anxiety and improved moods while waiting for dental treatment.”
